People have lived in Paracas, by the sea and inland, for at least 10,000 years. Numerous stone implements, such as spear points, arrowheads, hammers and animal effigy figures have been found by Sr. Juan Navarro over the course of 40 plus years of collecting in the field, and the best, but not all, are on display at the Paracas History Museum.
Due to the abundance of sea life and the fact that fresh water was plentiful, thanks to subterranean aquifers that still bring snow melt down from the distant Andes mountains, this was a rich area capable of sustaining a large human population.
Most of the artifacts are made from local volcanic stone.
